Application recommendations
In citrus orchards the first overwintered mealybug adults and eggs were seen on trees at the beginning of May. Biological control releases were also started with the first mealybugs occur. Citrus orchards releasing recommendations were given below.
Application Time | Pest Density | Dosage | Notes |
May - June at first mealybug occurrence |
Orchards with low mealybug density in previous year |
10 C. montrozieri (BiyoAvcı) / tree 10 L. dactylopii (BiyoArı)/ tree |
After release mealybug development should be follow in the orchard. If necessary second release may need. |
Orchards with high mealybug density in previous years (two application may need ) |
20 BiyoAvcı / aÄŸaç 20 BiyoArı / aÄŸaç |
THE IMPORTANT POINTS of BIOLOGICAL CONTROL APPLICATIONS
- The Leptomastix dactylopii (BiyoAri) and Cryptoleamous montrozieri (BiyoAvci) should be used together in the citrus orchards which have mealybug problem.
- Because the mode of action of these beneficials complete each others activity while covering mealybug life cycle.
- Leptomastix dactylopii (BiyoAri) parasitezed 3rd larval stage and young adults, Cryptolaemus montrozieri (BiyoAvci) prey on eggs of mealybug and early larval stages (1st and 2nd).
- Ant activities (Figure a) cause negative effect on beneficials especially on Leptomastix dactylopii (BiyoAri)
- Ants feeding on mealybug's sweet body secretion, while they are after their food their movements and odours inhibit the parasitoid activity.
- The orchards under high ant activity, to prevent ant disturbance dust malathion (25 %) spread the trunk of tree (Figure b)
- This could be apply on the trunk of tree just above the soil level by a sponge like bracelet (Figure b)
- This dusty area prevent the ants climing up to mealybug colony.
- In the orchards where biological control going to be applied should not be used insecticides (broad spectrum insecticides and/or insect growth regulators)
- If insecticides used there should be 30 days(4 weeks) passed from insecticide application and 45 days (6 weeks) passed from insect growth regulator applications.
- After biological control application the mentioned insecticides should not be used.
- These insecticides have direct negative effect on biological control.
